6 | Date-EDTF |
Date of creation of the original resource. Reflects the date in the "Date" field. Express all dates, including date ranges, using Library of Congress' Extended Date Time Format. Most recent version of EDTF available at https://www.loc.gov/standards/datetime/. Six formats are recommended for values in Date, each corresponding to a specific EDTF format: If the value of Date is YYYY, enter YYYY. If the value of Date is YYYY?, enter YYYY? If the value of Date is [month] DD, YYYY, enter YYYY-MM-DD. If the value of Date is [month], YYYY, enter YYYY-MM. If the value of Date is between YYYY and YYYY, enter YYYY/YYYY If the value of Date is between YYYY and YYYY?, enter YYYY?/YYYY? If the value of Date is not any of the above, consult the EDTF spedification to determine the appropriate notation. Date-Edtf value should agree with dates values entered in Interview Date and Dates fields. Examples: If the Date field = "1940" then Date EDTF = "1940" If the Date field = "1910?" then Date EDTF = "1910?" If Date field = "May 9, 2001" then Date EDTF = "2001-05-09" If Date field = "January 2008" then Date EDTF = "2008-01" If Date field = "between 1930 and 1939" then Date EDTF = "1930/1939" If Date field = "between 1855 and 1999?" then Date EDTF = "1855?/1999?" |

||
10 |
Notes |
Enter any information of importance that is not represented elsewhere.
Judgment should be used to determine whether the note: (1) pertains to a single digital object, and is therefore entered in the CONTENTdm page description, or, (2) more generally pertains to the “compound object” and belongs in the CONTENTdm document description.
For example, a note that the first 15 minutes of a single digitized audio track were blank on the original probably belongs in the CONTENTdm page description; however general information about the interviewee would go into the document description.
Notes for audio objects in ResearchWorks should be administrative; that is, these notes should be recorded to facilitate administering the digital collection.
Recommended note: record the timecode at which various parts of the oral history begin (example: “Dwight Watson’s description of his historic ascent of Mt. Watson is recounted at timecode 01:31:00”).
Recommended: Note any numbering system on the original audio in the original manuscript accession (this should be entered in the page description, even when there are multiple originals). |
[Note that belongs in the document description:] Mr Kumar grew up in a small town of Punjab, where he received his early education. He came to the University of Idaho in 1970 and worked towards Master’s Degree. He taught English and Humanities at Washington State University, University of Miami, and Colorado State University until 1986 when he joined Boeing.
[Note that could be entered in either the document description or the page description; in these cases, generally prefer entering the note in the document description:] Parts of the interview are conducted in Norwegian.
[Note that should be entered in the page description:] Original audio has first 15 minutes missing because of a reproduction error in 1982.
[Another note that could be entered into the page description] Dwight Watson’s description of his historic ascent of Mt. Watson is recounted at timecode 01:31:00
[Administrative note that could be entered in ResearchWorks:] Artifact appears in the audio bitstream at about 6:58. This WAV should be replaced. TG 2011-10-24. |

NOTES:
Oral history recordings at University of Washington Libraries:
UW Libraries Special Collections holds numerous oral histories conducted as part of UW Libraries projects (North Cascades History Project, Afro-American History Project, etc) as well as those that are part of manuscript collections. Oral histories can also be found in University Archives.
Common media types in an oral history include:
- Audio
- Transcript
- Images
- Video
Project outputs:
Oral history digitization project workflows may vary, but they must produce the following results:
- Master WAV files for audio will be uploaded to ResearchWorks (DSpace) at minimum 24 bit/48khz.
- The public will not have access to the collection of master WAV files.
- DSpace community/collection: University Libraries Administrative Documents [no public access]> Special Collections > Oral Histories
- There will be one record for each full interview. This means there will be one or more WAV files for each interview, but only one DSpace record in ResearchWorks for each interview.
- A subset of metadata defined in the above data dictionary – as enumerated in the data dictionary – will accompany each interview/WAV file(s).
- Derivative files:
- Preferred format as of 2011-11-18: MP3.
- Upload to CONTENTdm/Digital Collections.
- Audio should be uploaded to CONTENTdm as one contionuos interview (there should not be multiple audio files).
- All oral history collection will go into the “Oral History Collection” in CONTENTdm/Digital Collections.
- To distinguish a specific projects’ contribution to the CONTENTdm/Digital Collections “Oral History Collection,” use the “Project” field enumerated in the data dictionary above.
- All oral history materials – audio, transcripts, images, etc. -- will go into CONTENTdm/Digital Collections (as opposed to DSpace, where we will upload only master WAV files).
- A more complete metadata set will accompany each file into CONTENTdm/Digital Collections.
